Tor Books is coming back to SDCC this year with a great line up of signings, giveaways, and panels featuring authors like Cory Doctorow, Charlie Jane Anders, Seanan McGuire and others! THURSDAY

1:15pm – 2:15pm: SYFY Hosts the Great Debate, Ballroom 20
What superfan doesn’t love a good debate? Star Destroyer or Enterprise? Who was the best Batman? Have video games eclipsed movies and TV? John Hodgman (actor, writer, Internet judge) leads the ultimate debate, featuring panelists Adam Savage(former co-host, MythBusters), Orlando Jones (American Gods), Aisha Tyler (Archer), John Barrowman (Arrow), and Charlie Jane Anders (All the Birds in the Sky). Join in as they share their thoughts, feelings, and theories on the genre’s most influential moments, milestones, and people. Before you leave, you’ll get a chance to voice your opinion and help crown science fiction’s best moments of all time.

1:30pm – 2:30pm: Sixty Seconds to SFF Authors, Horton Grand Theatre
Paul Cornell (Chalk) moderates this version of the BBC radio game show Just a Minute. The object of the game is for panelists to talk for 60 seconds on a given subject “without hesitation, repetition, or deviation.” The comedy comes from attempts to keep within these rules and the banter among the participants. For science fiction and fantasy authors, the possible topics are endless. Contestants include Seanan McGuire (Down Among the Sticks and Bones), Gail Carriger (Imprudence: The Custard Protocol #2), Sam Sykes (An Affinity for Steel), Jason Hough(Injection Burn), Brandon Mull (Death Weavers: Five Kingdoms Book 4), and Sarah Beth Durst (The Reluctant Queen).

Dark conspiracies, forbidden knowledge, secret magic, unknown continents, and rebellious heirs populate these panelists’ fantastic worlds, but where do they get the inspiration for these thorny conundrums? Charlie N. Holmberg (The Paper Magician), Robin Hobb (The Fitz and the Fool trilogy), Christopher Paolini (The Official Eragon Coloring Book), James A. Owen (StarchildDawn of the Dragons), Erika Lewis (Game of Shadows), and Michael Johnston (Soleri) discuss building fantasy worlds with backstabbing, shadowy plots, shocking secrets, and surprise inheritances with Petra Mayer of NPR.

Readers, authors, and curators sometimes struggle to classify a work. Is it fantasy? Science fiction? Paranormal? Maybe all of the above? Authors Charlie Jane Anders (All the Birds in the Sky), Daryl Gregory (Spoonbenders), Peter Clines (Paradox Bound), Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Worship), Vic James (Gilded Cage: Book I of the Dark Gifts Trilogy), and Pierce Brown (Red Rising series) discuss the benefits and tricks of genre blending with Petra Mayer of NPR.

All stories require an element of conflict, but some authors see a darker vision than others when they gaze into the future. Panelists Alex R. Kahler (Runebinder), Scott Westerfeld (Spill Zone), Cory Doctorow (Walkaway)Annalee Newitz (Autonomous), and Scott Reintgen (Nyxia) serve as guides to poisoned presents, alternative timeline apocalypses, near and far future dystopias, and other not-so-cheery scenarios with Maryelizabeth Yturralde (Mysterious Galaxy).

12:00pm – 1:00pm: Buffy: A 20th Anniversary Celebration, Room 7AB
The authors of the upcoming oral history Slayers & Vampires from Tor Books about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman (co-authors of The Fifty-Year Mission) reopen the Hellmouth and look back at the secret history of the slayer who saved the world a lot, in honor of the show’s 20th anniversary. They will also look at what the future might hold for slayage in the 21st century and revisit the underappreciated genius of Angel and the Buffys that never were, featuring some surprise guests.
