Malgwyn ap Cuneglas is counselor to Arthur, High King of the Britons. When he accompanies his liege to the West to broker a deal between warring tribes they come across a scene of utmost depravity and murder to sicken even the most battle-hardened warrior. Things don’t get any better when they finally arrive at their destination to discover that King Doged is fighting to keep his kingdom safe from both Saxons from abroad and younger nobles vying for power. Doged loses that fight when shortly after Arthur and his counselor arrive, he is murdered. His young wife, defenseless and alone, appeals to Arthur to find her husband’s killer. Arthur quickly agrees and Malgwyn is given this almost impossible task.

Why would Arthur be so interested in helping keep this small region stable and under the High King influence? Perhaps because Doged’s people had discovered caves that might contain huge veins of gold . . .

The Stolen Bride is the next masterpiece in Tony Hays’s critically acclaimed Arthurian mystery series.

The Beloved Dead gets a starred review in PW and Library Journal

Place holder of - 28The Beloved Dead by Tony Hays gets a starred review in the February 14th edition of Publishers Weekly!

Below is the full review:

Hays merges a suspenseful serial killer story line with a persuasive recreation of fifth-century Britain in his superior third Arthurian mystery (after 2010’s The Divine Sacrifice). Arthur ap Uther, “the Rigotamos, the High King of all Britannia,” who’s preparing for a politically expedient marriage, dispatches his chief adviser, Malgwyn ap Cuneglas, to escort his bride-to-be, Gwyneira, and her father, Aircol, back to Arthur’s stronghold. On the way, Malgwyn gets caught up in the search for a savage murderer, who sexually abuses young girls before slitting their throats. The investigator has to wonder whether the killings, which reawaken painful memories from his own past, are aimed at destabilizing Arthur’s authority, perpetually under threat from envious rivals. That Arthur remains in love with Malgwyn’s admirable cousin, Guinevere, only exacerbates tension between Malgwyn and the legendary king, who emerges as a plausible flesh-and-blood ruler. Both Arthur fans and historical whodunit devotees will be more than satisfied. (Apr.)

The Beloved Dead also received a starred review in the 2-1-2011 print edition of Library Journal. Below is the full review:

The Beloved Dead: In his third outing (after The Killing Way and The Divine Sacrifice) Malgwyn, Arthur’s one-armed scribe and most trusted adviser, is to escort Arthur’s intended bride to Castellum Arturius, where the royal wedding will take place. On the eve of departure, a young woman is brutally raped and murdered, but Malgwyn has no time for an investigation. On the way, two more women are killed. Upon his return, Malgwyn finds that his cousin Guinevere, who has had a long-standing relationship with Arthur and is not dealing with the impending marriage very well, has sought sanctuary in a monastery and is the prime murder suspect.

VERDICT Hayes has captured the Arthurian legend and made it his own. Many complex plot threads and believable characters make this a series to be savored by historical mystery and Arthurian fiction fans.

The Beloved Dead releases Marcyh29th, 2011, and be sure to check out the trade paperback edition of The Divine Sacrifice by Tony Hays, available March 1st, 2011.

The Divine Sacrifice receives a starred review in Publishers Weekly

The Divine Sacrifice Tony Hays. Forge, $24.99 (304p) ISBN 978-0-7653-1946-3

Hays’s brilliant second mystery set in fifth-century Britain delivers on the promise of its predecessor, The Killing Way (2009). Much of the novel’s strength derives from its complex lead, Malgwyn ap Cuneglas, a soldier who lost a limb in combat and is now a trusted counselor to Arthur, “the High King of all Britannia.” When a monk, Brother Elafius, dies in mysterious circumstances, the abbot calls for Malgwyn, who has previously displayed a talent for detection, to investigate. Malgwyn can’t immediately identify the cause of death, but eventually finds evidence that Elafius’s neck was broken. A theological struggle centered on the Pelagian heresy (i.e., that man can achieve eternal life through good works alone) as well as threats to Arthur’s rule cloud the inquiry. Hays does a superb job of making the legendary king a convincing historical figure. Already, this series rivals the work of such proven masters of the subgenre as Steven Saylor and Laura Joh Rowland. News: Starred PW Review for The Killing Way

Placeholder of -76The Killing Way by Tony Hays gets a Starred Review in the February 16th issue of Publishers Weekly!

“History buffs as well as mystery fans will be amply rewarded”

*Political intrigue and ancient superstition loom large in this excellent mystery from Hays (Murder in the Latin Quarter), the first in a new series set in Dark Age Britain, when the Arthurian legend was born. Lord Arthur ap Uther asks Malgwyn ap Cuneglas, a clerk who has lost an arm battling Saxon invaders, to investigate the brutal slaying of Eleonore, a servant girl whose body is found outside the home of Arthur’s former teacher, Merlin, with Merlin’s bloody knife nearby. Malgywn must find the real killer fast, because the lords from all the local tribes have come to Castellum Arturius to choose a new leader, and ambitious contenders could seize on Arthur’s connection to a murderer to discredit him. One of the book’s many strengths is the way Malgywn, whose wife has died at Saxon hands, evolves from a bitter drunkard into a respected and valued adviser. History buffs as well as mystery fans will be amply rewarded. (Apr.)
