Stross returns to the world of his acclaimed MERCHANT PRINCES series

New York, NY – Monday, January 28, 2013 – David Hartwell of Tor Books (US) and Bella Pagan of Pan Macmillan/Tor UK are pleased to announce a major six figure deal with award-winning author, Charles Stross. The deal for a new trilogy in his acclaimed alternate history Merchant Princes series was set via Caitlin Blasdell of Liza Dawson Associates.

Tor published the first six books in the series to great acclaim beginning in 2004 and looks forward to publishing the new books starting in 2015.  Stross has been nominated for more than ten Hugo Awards and won twice to date.

“Charles Stross is one candidate for the best SF writer of the decade, and to relaunch The Merchant Princes with three new books has been one of my great editorial hopes,” said Senior Editor, David Hartwell. “I couldn’t be happier than if a sequel to Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land was discovered!”

Bella Pagan, Senior Commissioning editor with Tor in the UK, had this to say:

“I’m a big fan of Charles Stross’ hugely exciting Merchant Princes books, so I’m really delighted we could do a deal for this new series. These near-future thrillers are the book equivalent of catnip.”

Pan Macmillan/Tor UK will also reissue the first Merchant Princes books in three two-book omnibuses from April, with three in three months.

In 2008, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman devoted an entire article to analysing the series from an economic standpoint, and, in 2009 attended the World Science Fiction convention, opening the show with a 75-minute conversation with Stross.  “[These books] are, first and foremost, great fun…economic science fiction worth reading,” he has said.
