5 Must-Read Novels for Fans of Longmire

Walt Longmire is a badass and we miss already miss seeing him on screen. He does his detective work the old-fashioned way, and there’s something admirable about that. If you’re missing the small-town setting, thrilling investigations, and perplexing mysteries in Longmire, then you’ll enjoy our list of top 5 novels for Longmire fans.

Ghost Medicine by Aimée Thurlo and David Thurlo

Image Place holder of - 86 Navajo Police Special Investigator Ella Clah searches for the murderer of her ex and former colleague, Harry Ute. Found dead in a remote area of the Rez, Harry seems to have discovered a group of artifact smugglers, which may have gotten him killed. Now, Ella has to find answers, even when the locals on the reservation are too scared of the Navajo witches to tell Ella anything. Like Longmire, this novel deals with the same difficult dynamic between Rez and county police. The jurisdictional issues, incorporation of Native American beliefs, and captivating murder investigation reminded us a lot of the show, making Ghost Medicine a great pick for Longmire fans.

Strong to the Bone by Jon Land

Poster Placeholder of - 92 The award-winning Caitlin Strong Novels are always captivating and the latest installment, Strong to the Bone, lived up to our expectations. Strong is a Texas Ranger who has taken on her father’s old cases. In this novel, she pursues the killer in a triple murder case inside a Nazi POW camp in 1944. Strong’s investigation leads to a grim discovery that Nazism is definitely not over. Strong to the Bone has the same southern vibe as Longmire, but tackles a more political and widespread movement, the likes of which Longmire only occasionally touches on. And if you like this book as much as we did, there are eight other volumes for you to enjoy!

Benefit of the Doubt by Neal Griffin

Place holder of - 35 In Longmire, the introduction of the casino means more big-city crimes for the small-town Absaroka police. Thriller novel Benefit of the Doubt also explores this evolution of crime — and also the secrets hidden in local police departments. Former metropolitan cop Ben Sawyer is now a detective in a tiny Wisconsin town, where the higher-up cops seem to be corrupt. Soon, Ben is fired and his wife is accused of murder… he poked his head where it didn’t belong. Longmire meets Blue Bloods in this thriller mystery.

The Dread Line by Bruce DeSilva

Placeholder of -50 Bruce DeSilva’s Liam Mulligan novels are always a safe bet (and dangerous read). In The Dread Line, the former investigative reporter has become obsessed with a few cases: a cat that leaves its kills on his porch, a jewelry heist, and an animal torturer. But the biggest case — a case that is fighting for Mulligan’s attention — is that of the New England Patriots, who are carefully investigating a possible recruit to play it safe after their star player was accused of murder. It seems like a routine case, but it’s anything but. Filled to the brim with secrets and perfectly suited for new readers of the series, The Dread Line consists of big cases and small-town problems, just like Longmire.

Stripped Bare by Shannon Baker

Image Placeholder of - 97 Imagine Longmire, but set in Nebraska with a female version of Walt, and you’ll get Stripped Bare. Kate Fox was happily married to Grand County Sheriff Ted Conner; they lived together with their orphaned teenage niece Carly on a cattle ranch. But one night, Kate receives a call from Roxy at Bar J. Carly’s grandfather is dead and Ted has been shot… in Roxy’s bed. And now Carly’s missing. Like when Walt has to find his wife’s murderer in Longmire, Kate has to find the killer… and it’s personal.

This month, #TorChat is looking at love! Join us as we chat about falling in, falling out of, and writing about love with Deborah Coonts and the writing team of Aimée and David Thurlo on April 17th at 4 PM Eastern.

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce the April #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter.

TThis month, #TorChat is tacking a tough topic: love. What it’s like falling in love, falling out of love, and most of all: how do you write a believable love story or storyline? Joining us to talk about love are three people who write all about it, and will share their insights. First up: Deborah Coonts (@DeborahCoonts) is the author of the Lucky O’Toole series. Lucky Bastard, the next book in the series, publishes next month. Lucky has fallen in love, been dumped, done some dumping of her own, and come through it with her heart intact – well, more or less. Joining Deborah will be Aimée and David Thurlo, tweeting from @AimeeThurlo. The Thurlos have written more than seventy novels, together and separately, including the Ella Clah mysteries and their new novel, A Time of Change, which came out April 9th. As writing partners and husband and wife, the Thurlos know all about writing – and living – love!

The chat will be loosely moderated by Tor Publicist Aisha Cloud (@acloudy). We hope fans of romance novels, romantic subplots, and hell, fans of real-life romance will join us using the Twitter hashtag #TorChat!

About the Authors
DEBORAH COONTS (@DeborahCoonts) was born in Texas, according to her mother, though she’s not totally sure—her mother can’t be trusted. But she was definitely raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food, and beer. She currently resides in Las Vegas, where family and friends tell her she can’t get into too much trouble. Silly people. Coonts has built her own business, practiced law, flown airplanes, written a humor column for a national magazine, and survived a teenager. Her next novel, Lucky Bastard, will be published on May 14th.

AIMÉE and DAVID THURLO (@AimeeThurlo) have, together and separately, written more than seventy novels in a variety of genres. The Thurlos’ writing career began when Aimée was inspired to write a novel while David was teaching middle school. She sat down with legal pad and pencil, began a romantic intrigue, and soon found David looking over her shoulder whenever class was out. They quickly discovered that they could write with one voice, and their combined efforts resulted in books characterized by the unique stamp that defined their partnership in life and work. In addition to many romantic suspense novels, the Thurlos have written three different mystery series, including their flagship series of Ella Clah police procedurals, set on the Navajo Reservation. Their latest novel, A Time of Change, published on April 9th.

A Time of Change by Aimée Thurlo and David Thurlo

A Time of Change is a perfect example of the Thurlos’s ability to combine passion with tension as they introduce readers to Josephine Buck and other employees at a New Mexico trading post. When The Outpost’s owner dies, Josephine, a young Navajo woman, is shocked to discover that Tom Stuart, whom she thought of as a surrogate father, has left her the business.

Ben Stuart and his dad had had problems, but military service changed Ben for the better and put the two men back in each other’s lives. His father’s sudden death ends any possibility of a true reconciliation and leaves Ben fuming at being disinherited.

Suspecting that Jo had an affair with his father, Ben is determined to get control of the trading post. Jo’s hataalii training shows her that Ben is wounded in both body and soul, and she becomes determined to help him.

As Jo and Ben move toward a deeper understanding of each other, they learn that Tom Stuart was murdered and that the trading post at the center of their lives holds many secrets.

A Time of Change, by Aimée Thurlo and David Thurlo, releases today, April 9th!
