The Official Gifted & Talented Playlist

9781250883407Olivie Blakes’s Gifted & Talented is out now and she’s got a special treat for you! Check out the official G&T playlist below — the vibes? Corporate greed, sibling rivalry, gifted kids, clinical depression. We think you’ll love it!

By Olivie Blake

A lot of people ask me whether I write while listening to music, and the answer is I don’t, opting instead for total silence lest I accidentally type out the lyrics to what’s playing instead of whatever is being shouted down from the command center (I’m a pantser, so what happens in my brain is a total mystery until completion of the first draft; nobody’s in charge, much less available for consultation). However, a solid amount of the writing process is thinking and/or daydreaming, which is something I perform to music as often as I can. This playlist includes the songs that I listened to over the course of writing and editing my new book, GIFTED & TALENTED, a family dramedy about three siblings who, after the death of their father, must come to terms with the many failings in their personal lives, some of which are literally apocalyptic.

GIFTED & TALENTED features a variety of themes (corporate greed, sibling rivalry, the gifted kid to clinical depression pipeline) and there are definitely a few songs on the playlist specifically about the kind of ennui I tackled on the page. But the story is predominantly a character study—even more than that, it’s an examination of relationships. Like much of my work, the ensemble cast plays host to a variety of interpersonal tensions, some romantic in nature and others… well… let’s just say complex. Here are a few lyrics I felt were especially relevant to some of the character and relationship arcs in the book.

Waste My Life, Alice Merton

I wanna lose my mind with you / I wanna kill my time with you / I wanna waste my life / Wasting yours, too

Save My Life, the Band CAMINO

You’re beautiful when you’re lyin’ / and hurting me just for fun / so keep twisting the knife in / and telling me I’m the one … I can’t turn you down / to save my life / if you’re gonna break a heart / then come break mine

Scared, Joywave

I wanna touch you but I’m scared / I really love you though, I swear / I dread the moment you’re not there

EVERGREEN, PVRIS

‘Cause no one gives a damn shit / unless you’re dead / or you’re seventeen / a little born prodigy… I wanna be evergreen

INTERMISSION

Making the Bed, Olivia Rodrigo

Another perfect moment / that doesn’t feel like mine / another thing I forced to be a sign… every good thing has turned into something I dread / and I’m playing the victim so well in my head / but it’s me who’s been making the bed

Family of Six, Petey USA

Remember when they told ya it gets better when you’re older / well, for now, I still feel like a kid / cause if ya never showed me Bambi / I could breathe instead of panic / I’d provide for a family of six

Everybody’s Different, Joe P

Everybody’s better than they used to be / maybe I’m just holding up the line / back down on my knees, all this concrete’s killing me / you know I thought it’d go my way this time

Darling, the Planets, The Rare Occasions

Darling, I love you, but sometimes the planets are pulling us two different ways / How do we hold on to all that we know without one of us having to change?

9781250890436Another TJ Klune book dropped, you know what that means! Dive into TJ Klune’s carefully curated playlist to get the perfect listening experience while reading The Bones Beneath My Skin

By TJ Klune

The 90s were a weird, weird time. At the beginning of the decade, very few had cell phones or internet. By the end, many did. The 90s changed so much of how we view the world today.

And then, of course, there’s the music. Below, you’ll find twelve songs I’ve selected for The Bones Beneath My Skin playlist. For those who remember such a time, welcome back. I hope much of the music here makes you bittersweetly nostalgic. For the younger crowds, consider this a lesson in music from the 1900s. You are welcome.

TJ Klune

The Beatles — “Hey Jude”

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.

Soundgarden — “Black Hole Sun”

In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguises no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
And the sun in my disgrace

Foo Fighters – “Everlong”

If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when

The Cranberries — “Dreams”

Oh, my life is changing everyday

In every possible way
And oh, my dreams
It’s never quite as it seems
Never quite as it seems

R.E.M. — “Losing My Religion”

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough

The Fugees — “Killing Me Softly”

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

INTERMISSION

Nirvana— “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

I’m worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Radiohead — “Creep”

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You’re so fucking special

Eagle-Eye Cherry — “Save Tonight”

Save tonight
And fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow
Tomorrow I’ll be gone

Wilson Phillips — “Hold On”

Some day somebody’s gonna make you

want to turn around and say goodbye
Until then, baby, are you going to let ’em

hold you down and make you cry?
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know, things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold… on for one more day

Depeche Mode — “Personal Jesus”

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

The Verve — “Bittersweet Symphony”

‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, that’s life
Tryna make ends meet, you’re a slave to money then you die
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah

Dysfunctional Families at Tor: A List of Our Most Chaotic Households

Dysfunctional family dynamics, anyone? If you love messy relationships, complicated histories, and drama, then these reads belong on your shelf. With Olivie Blake’s Gifted & Talented right around the corner, we thought it’d be fun to get a little messy. 😏

9781250883407Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake

Three siblings. One massive inheritance. A lifetime of unresolved issues. Thayer Wren’s death leaves his three telepathic and electrokinetically gifted children in a war for his empire, but the real battle is against each other. Sibling rivalries, personal failures, and long-held grudges explode in this biting, dark take on power, legacy, and family dysfunction. Out on 4/01/2025!

GREEN CREEK SERIES The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune

Werewolves, found family, and generational trauma–what more could you ask for? The Green Creek series is a sweeping saga of loyalty, betrayal, and complicated family bonds that stretch beyond blood. Whether it’s sons struggling to live up to their fathers’ expectations or packs built on both love and heartbreak, Klune delivers an emotional rollercoaster where family is everything…and nothing is ever simple.

9781250871251Cascade Failure by L.M. Sagas

Surviving in space is hard. Surviving with your family? Even harder. Cascade Failure follows a scrappy crew of smugglers on the fringes of the universe, but their biggest problem isn’t just staying alive, it’s each other. This novel is full of found family dynamics, grudges, and the kind of loyalty that only comes from being trapped in the same spaceship for way too long. If you love stories where sibling tensions and unresolved drama bubble under the surface of high-stakes adventures, this is the book for you.

9781250217431In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune

What happens when your family isn’t just dysfunctional but also… not entirely human? In this heartwarming yet chaotic sci-fi fairytale, a small found family of robots and a human live in peaceful isolation until the past comes knocking. In the Lives of Puppets explores the complexities of love, memory, and what it truly means to be family, even when secrets threaten to tear them apart. If you enjoy heart-wrenching yet hopeful stories about unconventional families, this one will stick with you.

9781250907981The Naming Song by Jedediah Berry

In a world where words are vanishing, a nameless courier finds herself caught up with a traveling theater troupe that brings lost language back to life. But the past has a hold on her, and the more she unravels her own history, the more she realizes that her family is at the root of it all. Secrets, betrayals, and a legacy built on things left unsaid make this a haunting exploration of identity and belonging.

9781250883407Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six comes the story of three siblings who, upon the death of their father, are forced to reckon with their long-festering rivalries, dangerous abilities, and the crushing weight of all their unrealized adolescent potential.

Where there’s a will, there’s a war.

Thayer Wren, the brilliant CEO of Wrenfare Magitech and so-called father of modern technology, is dead. Any one of his three telepathically and electrokinetically gifted children would be a plausible inheritor to the Wrenfare throne.

Or at least, so they like to think. Meredith, textbook accomplished eldest daughter and the head of her own groundbreaking biotech company, has recently cured mental illness. You’re welcome! If only her father’s fortune wasn’t her last hope for keeping her journalist ex-boyfriend from exposing what she really is: a total fraud.

Arthur, second-youngest congressman in history, fights the good fight every day of his life. And yet, his wife might be leaving him, and he’s losing his re-election campaign. But his dead father’s approval in the form of a seat on the Wrenfare throne might just turn his sinking ship around.

Eilidh, once the world’s most famous ballerina, has spent the last five years as a run-of-the-mill marketing executive at her father’s company after a life-altering injury put an end to her prodigious career. She might be lacking in accolades compared to her siblings, but if her father left her everything, it would finally validate her worth—by confirming she’d been his favorite all along.

On the pipeline of gifted kid to clinically depressed adult, nobody wins—but which Wren will come out on top? Out on 04/01/2025!

Catherine Bildstein is dead. She is not gone. She was murdered. Now, she’s out for revenge.

In a gothic historical fantasy about poisonous attraction and strange magic, a sorcerer obsesses over a woman, and when he understands he cannot possess her, kills her. Unsatisfied with this peak level of despicability, he sends projections of himself out into the world to ruin the lives of more women who won’t deliver to him the affection to which he believes himself entitled.

Dead Catherine may be, but her slighted ghost feels strongly the magnetism of revenge. The world is full of strange magic. Garbage wizards better watch out. Out now in paperback!

one for my enemy by olivie blakeOne for My Enemy by Olivie Blake

This story of star-crossed love and Manhattan’s occult underworld is Romeo & Juliet done Olivie Blake-style. Those who have read The Atlas Series know that Blake doesn’t play when it comes to writing emotionally devastating arcs, and One for My Enemy is no exception. It’s the scions of shadow underlord Koschei the Deathless versus the daughters of potion maven Baba Yaga as heirs to two respective magical crime families. Doesn’t matter how supernatural you are though—love will turn the lives of you and everyone you know upside down, and strong feeling is a prerequisite for revenge.

Bosses From Hell : Books with Dreadful Bosses

We’ve all had a boss who’s made us question our life choices, but in the world of fiction, bad bosses take things to a whoooooole new level. Whether they’re ruthless tyrants, manipulative masterminds, or just downright evil, these overlords make our real-life work woes seem like a walk in the park. Celebrate the release of Picks and Shovels by Cory Doctorow by diving into our spoiler-free list of the bad, the worse, and the downright diabolical bosses in our books!

9781250865908Picks and Shovels by Cory Doctorow

New York Times bestselling author Cory Doctorow returns to the world of Red Team Blues to bring us the origin story of Martin Hench and the most powerful new tool for crime ever invented: the personal computer.

The year is 1986. The city is San Francisco. Here, Martin Hench will invent the forensic accountant–what a bounty hunter is to people, he is to money–but for now he’s an MIT dropout odd-jobbing his way around a city still reeling from the invention of a revolutionary new technology that will change everything about crime forever, one we now take completely for granted.

When Marty finds himself hired by Silicon Valley PC startup Fidelity Computing to investigate a group of disgruntled ex-employees who’ve founded a competitor startup, he quickly realizes he’s on the wrong side. Marty ditches the greasy old guys running Fidelity Computing without a second thought, utterly infatuated with the electric atmosphere of Computing Freedom. Located in the heart of the Mission, this group of brilliant young women found themselves exhausted by the predatory business practices of Fidelity Computing and set out to beat them at their own game, making better computers and driving Fidelity Computing out of business. But this optimistic startup, fueled by young love and California-style burritos, has no idea the depth of the evil they’re seeking to unroot or the risks they run. In this company-eat-company city, Martin and his friends will be lucky to escape with their lives.

A group of employees and their CEO, celebrating the sale of their remarkable emotion-mapping-AI-algorithm, crash onto a not-quite-deserted tropical island. Luckily, those who survived have found a beautiful, fully-stocked private palace, with all the latest technological updates (though one without connection to the outside world). The house, however, has more secrets than anyone might have guessed, and a much darker reason for having been built and left behind.

Kristen, the hyper-competent “chief emotional manager” (a position created by her eccentric, boyish billionaire boss, Sumter) is trying to keep her colleagues stable throughout this new challenge, but staying sane seems to be as much of a challenge as staying alive. Being a woman in tech has always meant having to be smarter than anyone expects–and Kristen’s knack for out-of-the-box problem-solving and quick thinking has gotten her to the top of her field. But will a killer instinct be enough to survive the island?

Jake had enemies, and now they’re coming after Charlie.

It’s up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyper-intelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good. In a dog-eat-dog world…be a cat.

But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. Place holder of - 77Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life, built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six magical and so-called dangerous children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago.

And he is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth; Zoe Chapelwhite, the island’s sprite; and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children. But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

The Naming SongThe Naming Song by Jedediah Berry

When the words went away, the world changed.

All meaning was lost, and every border fell. Monsters slipped from dreams to haunt the waking while ghosts wandered the land in futile reveries. Only with the rise of the committees of the named—Maps, Ghosts, Dreams, and Names—could the people stand against the terrors of the nameless wilds. They built borders around their world and within their minds, shackled ghosts and hunted monsters, and went to war against the unknown.

For one unnamed courier of the Names Committee, the task of delivering new words preserves her place in a world that fears her. But after a series of monstrous attacks on the named, she is forced to flee her committee and seek her long-lost sister. Accompanied by a patchwork ghost, a fretful monster, and a nameless animal who prowls the shadows, her search for the truth of her past opens the door to a revolutionary future—for the words she carries will reshape the world.
