Forge Your Own Holiday Party!

By Ariana Carpentieri:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to cozy up with some good books while you’re feeling fervently festive. If you’re looking for some inspo to throw your own little bookish soirée this holiday season, then look no further! Team Forge has you covered. Read below to see the food & drinks we think would make the perfect pairings with some of our 2023 books so that you can forge your own holiday party with your book club!

Up on the Woof Top by Spencer Quinn

Up on the Woof Top

What to Eat: Chet the dog, “the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction” (Boston Globe) and his human partner Bernie Little find themselves high in the mountains this holiday season to help Dame Ariadne Carlisle, a renowned author of bestselling Christmas mysteries, find Rudy, her lead reindeer and good luck charm, who has gone missing. Since the setting is the mountains, we think creme puffs would be a great treat because you could even assemble them in a mountain-like shape by creating a classic croquembouche–AKA: a cream puff tower!

What to Drink: Nothing beats curling up under a cozy blanket and sipping on something that’ll warm you from the inside out. And a holiday read like Up on the Woof Top calls for a staple holiday drink! We feel hot chocolate is the best beverage to pair with this wonderful book.

The Bell in the Fog by Lev AC Rosen

The Bell in the Fog

What to Eat: Matchboxes are an important component in Andy’s investigation (and can also be seen making a cameo on the cover), so something with a little fire to it would make a great treat to eat while you read! These spicy chocolate cookies are sure to bring just the right amount of heat to your holiday book club gathering.

What to Drink: The best drink to pair with The Bell in the Fog is actually one featured in the book!: “He smiles and mixes something up, crushing leaves into ice, and making him smell like mint. I watch his arms as he turns the muddler, muscles swelling as they fill out his sleeves. He sets the drink down in front of me. ‘Mint julep. It won’t make you forget, but I think it’ll help you sleep through this when you head upstairs.’” This mint julep recipe is sure to be just as refreshing as reading this historical mystery is!

A Good Family by Matt Goldman

A Good Family

What to Eat: Katie Kuhlmann’s marriage is falling apart. But she has a secure job, her children are healthy, and her house, a new construction in the prestigious Country Club neighborhood of Edina, Minnesota, is beautiful. She can almost ignore the way her husband, Jack, has been acting–constantly checking his phone, not going to work, disappearing from the house only to show up again without explanation. A common Country Club appetizer menu option is charcuterie, so you can build your own at home and snack while you read!

What to Drink: Outwardly, this family has a seemingly perfect home life and have everything in order…but secrets are often hidden behind closed doors. So we think a classic, staple cocktail like an old fashioned would be the perfect fit. After all, a perfect ‘all-American’ family is a pretty ‘old fashioned’ notion!

Mr. Katō Plays Family by Milena Michiko Flašar; translated by Caroline Froh

Mr Kato Plays Family

What to Eat: Kaiserschmarrn is a traditional Austrian dessert consisting of a fluffy, pancake-like batter containing fruit and nuts and topped with powdered sugar in excess. And it’s perfect for sharing! We imagine that while you and your bookclub sit down to share a big platter of Kaiserschmarrn, Mr. Katō and all of his family, found or otherwise, will be sitting around their own table passing the apple sauce and powdered sugar.

What to Drink: Give a toast to the wonderful novel Mr. Katō Plays Family by raising a glass and sipping on some Glühwein (mulled wine). The word “Glühwein” roughly translates to “glow wine.” A traditional Glühwein typically includes a variety of spices such as cinnamon, clove, and star anise: all perfect ingredients for a holiday soirée!

The Quantum Solution by Eric Van Lustbader

The Quantum Solution

What to Eat: Ryder and her long-time partner, Ben Butler, risk their lives to discover who the true combatants are, racing against the doomsday scenario of all-out war between America and Russia. We think a food with opposing flavors–something both savory and sweet–would make for a perfect pairing. A maple bacon donut would be a great treat to savor while you devour this thriller!

What to Drink: This high-stakes, thrilling, and fast-pasted book definitely packs a serious punch. So what better drink is there to pair with The Quantum Solution than an actual holiday punch?! Test out this quick and easy recipe that’ll have you spreading some good cheer with the season’s signature flavors like cranberry, orange, apple cider, and ginger.

Raw Dog by Jamie Loftus

Raw Dog

What to Eat: Raw Dog is a book all about hot dogs (with a healthy dose of travelogue and political commentary). And while a frankfurter might not be the best ingredient to include in a dessert, these adorable No-Bake Twinkie ‘Hot Dogs’ are the next best thing. They’re quick and easy to make (just like real hot dogs are) and perfect to whip up for a holiday gathering. Trust us when we say this cute dessert is a real ‘wiener!’

What to Drink: Hot dogs simply wouldn’t be the magnificent creations they are without the help of the condiments that compliment them. Many people have heated debates about what the best type of hot dog is (a New York dog, a Chicago dog, a Boston Dog; the list goes on!) but we think we can all agree on the fact that any superior hot dog is the one adorned with our favorite condiment sidekicks. So a fun (albeit unique) drink that features an actual condiment is the best option here! Try sippin’ on a pickle martini while you “sleigh” your way through Raw Dog!

We’ve come a long way in the forty years since the Shongairi attacked Earth, killed half its people, and then were driven away by an alliance of humans with the other sentient bipeds who inhabit our planet. We took the technology they left behind, and rapidly built ourselves into a starfaring civilization. Because we haven’t got a moment to lose. Because it’s clear that there are even more powerful, more hostile aliens out there, and Earth needs allies. But it also transpires that the Shongairi expedition that nearly destroyed our home planet … wasn’t an official one. That, indeed, its commander may have been acting as an unwitting cats-paw for the Founders, the ancient alliance of very old, very evil aliens who run the Hegemony that dominates our galaxy, and who hold the Shongairi, as they hold most non-Founder species, in not-so-benign contempt. Indeed, it may turn out to be possible to turn the Shongairi into our allies against the Hegemony.

The Great War is over. Everfair has found peace within its borders. But our heroes’ stories are far from done. Tink and his sister Bee-Lung are traveling the world via aircanoe, spreading the spores of a mysterious empathy-generating fungus. Through these spores, they seek to build bonds between people and help spread revolutionary sentiments of socialism and equality—the very ideals that led to Everfair’s founding. Meanwhile, Everfair’s Princess Mwadi and Prince Ilunga return home from a sojourn in Egypt to vie for their country’s rule following the abdication of their father King Mwenda. But their mother, Queen Josina, manipulates them both from behind the scenes, while also pitting Europe’s influenza-weakened political powers against one another as these countries fight to regain control of their rebellious colonies. Will Everfair continue to serve as a symbol of hope, freedom, and equality to anticolonial movements around the world, or will it fall to forces inside and out?

The Jubilee Tides will drown the continents of the planet Miranda beneath the weight of her own oceans. But as the once-in-two-centuries cataclysm approaches, an even greater catastrophe threatens this dark and dangerous planet of tale-spinners, conjurers, and shapechangers. A man from the Bureau of Proscribed Technologies has been sent to investigate. For Gregorian has come, a genius renegade scientist and charismatic bush wizard. With magic and forbidden technology, he plans to remake the rotting, dying world in his own evil image—and to force whom or whatever remains on its diminishing surface toward a terrifying and astonishing confrontation with death and transcendence. The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant, a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money, and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island, where scenic, imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen, reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait, what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island, he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life. Martin has made his most dangerous mistake yet: trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them, money is a tool, a game, and a way to keep score, and they’ve found their newest mark—California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified, they are interested not in the lives they ruin, but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy.

It ain’t easy. Branded a Guild deserter, Jal “accidentally” lands a ride on a Guild ship. Helmed by an AI, with a ship’s engineer/medic who doesn’t see much of a difference between the two jobs, and a “don’t make me shoot you” XO, the Guild crew of the Ambit is a little . . . different. They’re also in over their heads. Responding to a distress call from an abandoned planet, they find a mass grave, and a live programmer who knows how it happened. The Trust has plans. This isn’t the first dead planet, and it’s not going to be the last. Unless the crew of the Ambit can stop it.

opens in a new windowEverfair opens in a new windoweverfair by nisi shawl by Nisi Shawl — $2.99

In this re-imagining of Belgium’s disastrous colonization of the Congo, African American missionaries join forces with British socialists to purchase land from the Congo Free State’s “owner,” King Leopold II. This land, which they name Everfair, is set aside as a safe haven for native populations of the Congo as well as settlers from around the world, including dream-eyed Europeans attempting to create a better society, formerly enslaved people returning from America, and Chinese railroad builders escaping hard labor. Using the combined knowledge of four continents, Everfair becomes a land of spying cats and gulls, nuclear dirigibles buoyed by barkcloth balloons, and silent pistols that shoot poison knives. With this technology, Everfair will attempt to defeat the Belgian tyrant Leopold II. But even if they can defeat their great enemy, a looming world war and political infighting may threaten to destroy everything they have built.

The incessant war between the bickering city states of Quon Tali rages. So engrossed are the warring lords and princes in their own petty feuds that few notice that an upstart mage from Dal Hon has gained control of the southern seas. Kellanved could not care less about any of this petty politicking or strategy or war. Something other and altogether more mysterious has caught his attention and he – together with a reluctant and his decidedly skeptical friend Dancer – traverse continents and journey through the Realms. But this ancient mystery that has so captivated Kellanved is neither esoteric nor ephemeral. It involves the Elder races themselves, and more alarmingly, the semi-mythic Army of Dust and Bone. Surely no one in their right mind would be so foolish as to embark on a journey from which none have returned? Well, no one except Kellanved.
