November #TorChat Lineup Revealed

This month, #TorChat focuses on the importance of setting, from real world places to imaginary spaces. Joining us on November 14th from 4 to 5 PM EST are Suzanne Johnson, Felix Gilman, and Joseph Nassise, to talk about the richly developed worlds they’ve populated in their books!

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce the November #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter.

Setting is, arguably, just as important as the main characters in a novel. How an author creates and describes their world can give us chills, thrills, joy, and even tears. What does it take to create a realistic world, even one that comes populated with ghosts, demons, or monsters? We’ve invited three masters of the subject to chat with us on Twitter about how they do it. Joining us will be Suzanne Johnson, the author of River Road, the second book in the Sentinels of New Orleans series, featuring a beautiful, fragile New Orleans post-Katrina; Felix Gilman, the author of The Rise of Ransom City, a book that shows that steampunk is an ideal fit for not just Victorian England, but the American West; and Joseph Nassise, whose book King of the Dead features a protagonist who gave up his normal sight to see the true world that surrounds us – one filled with ghosts and things much worse. These three authors know how to set a scene, and they’re ready and willing to dish their secrets!

About the Authors

SUZANNE JOHNSON (@suzanne_johnson) is a magazine editor and features writer with more than fifty national writing and editing awards. A longtime New Orleans resident, she helped rebuild for two years after Hurricane Katrina. She currently lives in Alabama. River Road, her second novel, publishes on November 13th.

FELIX GILMAN (@felixgilman) has been nominated for the John W. Campbell award and the Locus Award for best new writer. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Thunderer, Gears of the City, and The Half-Made World, which was listed by Amazon as one of the ten best SF/F novels of 2010. His latest book, The Rise of Ransom City, publishes on November 27th.

JOSEPH NASSISE (@jnassise)is the author of the bestselling Templar Chronicles series and Eyes to See, the first novel the Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles. He lives in Arizona with his wife and four children. His new novel, King of the Dead, publishes on November 27th.

This month, #TorChat is talking about firsts—as in, first novels. We’ll be chatting with three debut authors who’ve just published their very first genre fiction books. Joining us to talk about how all their dreams will come true are Max Gladstone, the author of Three Parts Dead, a combination fantasy and legal thriller featuring dead gods and chain-smoking priests; Tina Connolly, whose Ironskin is a retelling of Jane Eyre set during the aftermath of a massive fae war; and Linda Grimes, the author of In a Fix, an urban fantasy featuring the aura adaptor extraordinaire Ciel Halligan. These three authors will be chatting with fans about how it feels to get their first novel published, their path to publication, and what happens once the book is out there in the world.

About the Authors
MAX GLADSTONE (@maxgladstone) went to Yale, where he studied Chinese and wrote a short story that became a finalist in the Writers of the Future competition. He has taught in southern Anhui, wrecked a bicycle in Angkor Wat, and been thrown from a horse in Mongolia. Three Parts Dead is his first novel. It published on October 2nd.

TINA CONNOLLY (@tinaconnolly) lives in Portland with her husband and toddler. Her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons, Fantasy Magazine, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Highlights Magazine, and the anthology Unplugged: Year’s Best Online SF 2008. Connolly is a frequent reader for Escape Pod and Podcastle, and works as a face painter, which means a glitter-filled house is an occupational hazard. Ironskin, her first novel, published on October 2nd.

LINDA GRIMES (@linda_grimes) grew up in Texas, where she taught high school English to students who were more interested in heckling her at the theater where she moonlighted than in learning to conjugate verbs. Like her globetrotting main character, Linda has spent her share of time overseas, where, among other things, she witnessed—up close and personal—a police takedown of a purse snatcher in Paris, became a bit too acquainted with a gun-running couple in Ireland (through a misunderstanding while breaking into the ruins of a castle closed for the season), and almost froze to death in an ice cave in Switzerland. She has since decided that writing is slightly less hazardous than travel. Her first novel, In a Fix, published on September 4th.

This month, #TorChat is looking at technology, both in science fiction and in the book industry itself. We’ll be chatting with two giants of the internet, science fiction, and geekery at large: Cory Doctorow and Charles Stross. Doctorow and Stross have co-authored the recently released The Rapture of the Nerds, about a post-singularity future in which Tech Jury Service members must decide about the suitability of gadgets for human consumption. Backing the technical insights and social commentary present in Rapture is the fact that these two men have their thumbs on the pulse of our internet culture. Doctorow is an author, blogger, technology activist and co-editor of the popular blog Boing Boing, where he frequently talks about issues of copyright, hacking, and his own experiences in the publishing world. His novels are simultaneously published by Tor Books and made available for free online under a Creative Commons license. Charles Stross, author of the popular Merchant Princes series (amongst others) had a convoluted road to becoming an author including a stint writing a monthly Linux column for Computer Shopper. He now regularly writes articles for other online publications and keeps a blog at antipope.org/charlie. In 2009 he made a splash at WorldCon for his widely praised dialogue with Nobel economics laureate Paul Krugman where they discussed the intersection of economics and Science Fiction. Together, Cory and Charles have a wide perspective on technology, both in publishing and outside of it.

The chat will be moderated by Tor Senior Editor Patrick Nielsen Hayden (@pnh). Patrick has edited Cory’s novels since the very beginning, has worked with Charlie on a number of short-fiction pieces for Tor.com, and edited The Rapture of the Nerds for Tor Books. He is also a significant online presence himself. He and his wife, fellow editor Teresa Nielsen Hayden, blog about a wide variety of topics, including technology and publishing, at Making Light. About the Authors
CORY DOCTOROW (@doctorow) is a science fiction novelist, blogger and technology activist. He is the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing, and a contributor to The Guardian, The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Wired, and many other newspapers, magazines and websites. He has won the Locus and Sunburst Awards, and been nominated for the Hugo, Nebula and British Science Fiction Awards. His New York Times Bestseller Little Brother was published in May 2008. A sequel, Homeland, will be published in 2013, and another young adult novel, Pirate Cinema will precede it in October 2012. His latest adult novel is The Rapture of the Nerds, co-written with Charles Stross, which published on September 4th.

CHARLES STROSS (@cstross) knew he wanted to be a science fiction writer from the age of six, and astonishingly, nobody ever considered therapy until it was too late. Along the way to his current occupation, he has been a pharmacist and worked in the tech industry before becoming a freelance tech journalist. Implausibly, after fifteen years of toiling away in relatively obscurity in the fiction world, Stross’s work took off, and he now writes fiction full-time. He has sold around sixteen novels, has won a Hugo Award for his novella “The Concrete Jungle,” and a Locus Award for his novel Accelerando, and been translated into a dozen different languages. His most recent novel, co-written by Cory Doctorow, is The Rapture of the Nerds.

PATRICK NIELSEN HAYDEN (@pnh), our illustrious moderator, is a Senior Editor at Tor Books. He’s also a genre fiction fan, essayist, reviewer, anthologist, teacher, and blogger. He has won both the World Fantasy Award and the Hugo Award. Announcing Girls’ Nightmare Out!

August spells the end of glorious summer days and the return of classrooms and assigned reading. What better way to celebrate the end of summer than with a Young Adult #TorChat, followed by a one-of-a-kind tour!

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce Girls’ Nightmare Out, a week-long event featuring three amazing YA authors: Lisa Desrochers, Kendare Blake, and Marta Acosta!

Girls’ Nightmare Out will launch with the August #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter. The chat will take place on next Wednesday, August 15th, from 4 to 5 PM Eastern. As students all across the country try to squeeze in just one more fun book before picking up their textbooks again, we’ll be joined by Lisa Desrochers (@LisaDez), the author of the Personal Demons trilogy, whose final volume, Last Rite, was published in May; Kendare Blake (@KendareBlake), whose debut took readers and critics alike by storm and whose new novel, Girl of Nightmares, a genre-bending love story drenched in blood and terror, publishes in August; and Marta Acosta (@MartaAcosta), author of the popular Casa Dracula series, as well as her YA debut, the gothic Dark Companion, published on July 3, 2012.

The chat will be loosely moderated by Katie Bartow, the blogger behind Mundie Moms, a popular YA review site. He also has a Ph.D. in U.S. History. Now, as D. B. Jackson, he is working on something new, combining his love of fantasy with his fascination with American history. His first novel, Thieftaker, was published on July 3rd.

IAN TREGILLIS (@ITregillis) attended the University of Minnesota for both college and graduate school. Eventually, the university decided it had seen quite enough of him, so it politely asked him to leave, grow up, and get a real job. Ian’s parting gift was a doctorate in physics for his research on radio galaxies. He now lives in northern New Mexico, where he consorts with writers, scientists, and other disreputable types. His latest book is The Coldest War, the second book in the Milkweed Triptych, which publishes on July 17th.

ALEX BLEDSOE (@AlexBledsoe) grew up in west Tennessee, and now lives in a Wisconsin town famous for trolls. He has been a reporter, editor, photographer, and door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman. He spends his days writing and trying to teach two sons to act live they’ve been to town before. His new book is Wake of the Bloody Angel, the fourth in the Eddie LaCrosse sword-jockey series, which published on July 3rd.

Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC, is a New York-based publisher of hardcover and softcover books. Founded in 1980, Tor annually publishes what is arguably the largest and most diverse line of science fiction and fantasy ever produced by a single English-language publisher. In 2002, Tor launched Starscape, an imprint dedicated to publishing quality science fiction and fantasy for young readers, including books by critically acclaimed and award winning authors such as Cory Doctorow, Orson Scott Card, and David Lubar.
