What makes a villain an interesting character? A complex nemesis? An antagonist worthy of a great epic? Ilana C. Myer, author of The Harp and Ring Sequence, explores the nuances that go into writing a great Big Bad in the below feature. Let us know your favorite literary villains in the comments!

Prophecies unfold, legends turn real, and a war of mythical proportions endangers the realm in Ilana C. Myer’s epic fantasy The Poet King, the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed Fire Dance, continuing The Harp and Ring Sequence.

By Ilana C. Myer

Years ago I participated in a panel about villains in science fiction and fantasy, and it got me thinking. I have some pretty strong ideas about villains in fiction, which panel moderator Charlie Jane Anders’ incisive questions forced me to re-examine. And having these ideas clarified in one’s mind is invaluable for a writer’s toolbox.

I thought about how dissatisfied I often am with commentary on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. One of the most common criticisms of Tolkien is that his characterization is “Manichean” (the critics’ word, not mine)—the good guys are very good, the bad guys very bad, and there’s no nuance. I’m done wondering if we read the same book. I’ll just lay out what I think, in the context of what it means to create an effective villain.

It’s true Sauron is not a multi-dimensional villain (despite Elrond’s assertion that he was once good, that “nothing is evil in the beginning”). If you want a complex villain in Tolkien you have to look to Gollum, Saruman, or even Denethor. A villain like Sauron is more of a dark force than a character. He has a different narrative purpose—to galvanize the protagonists, though not just to action. Sauron forces the heroes of Lord of the Rings onto the battleground of the psyche.

Through the Ring—an extension of Sauron—the protagonists contend with their own temptations, weaknesses, and most denied impulses. We see this most clearly in Gollum, who is corrupted by the Ring and presented as a mirror image of Frodo—the person Frodo is in danger of becoming. But we see it with other characters, too, such as Galadriel, whose secret desire for power is laid bare by the Ring. Far from consisting of bland, benign, cloyingly nice good guys, Lord of the Rings depicts characters struggling with what is most alluringly dark within themselves. Each character’s internal battle is unique, depending on the temptation that lies nearest his or her heart.

In my view, a good epic fantasy will usually have more than one kind of villain. In George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire we have outright monsters like Gregor Clegane and Joffrey Baratheon, but also Jaime Lannister whom you might actually want to have a beer with. And then there are the White Walkers, unambiguously evil, the threat everyone will be forced to stand against. The complexity introduced by a variety of antagonists enriches the story. Along the way they hold a dark mirror to the protagonists, revealing who they might become as a consequence of even one misstep—a wrong turn in the road.

My series about poets and enchantment is layered around several antagonists. One is a Court Poet who becomes twisted by dark magic. Another is the Poet King, a natural leader, whose charisma and skill bolster his claims to the throne. He is a figure with many parallels in history, such as, for example, leaders who believe their revolutions justify the sacrifice of innocents: eggs broken to make the omelet.

Such a person may very well have admirable qualities. Certainly they would have the power to mesmerize, to dazzle—but what is underneath? I probed for the humanity in such a character; someone who would later express the fear, “I felt like I was losing myself. Like the enchantments in me had overcome the man.”

The humanizing of an antagonist hinges on what they want—what we desire is where we are most vulnerable. A sympathetic antagonist challenges the reader, makes the reader conflicted about the outcome of the story. I’m of the mind that a conflicted reader is generally a good thing. So perhaps the compassionate author, who secretly loves all the characters, even the bad ones, is in truth the cruelest villain of all.

April #TorChat Lineup Revealed

April #TorChat Lineup Revealed

Place holder of - 72 Image Placeholder of - 81

This month, #TorChat is looking at love! Join us as we chat about falling in, falling out of, and writing about love with Deborah Coonts and the writing team of Aimée and David Thurlo on April 17th at 4 PM Eastern.

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce the April #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter.

TThis month, #TorChat is tacking a tough topic: love. What it’s like falling in love, falling out of love, and most of all: how do you write a believable love story or storyline? Joining us to talk about love are three people who write all about it, and will share their insights. First up: Deborah Coonts (@DeborahCoonts) is the author of the Lucky O’Toole series. Lucky Bastard, the next book in the series, publishes next month. Lucky has fallen in love, been dumped, done some dumping of her own, and come through it with her heart intact – well, more or less. Joining Deborah will be Aimée and David Thurlo, tweeting from @AimeeThurlo. The Thurlos have written more than seventy novels, together and separately, including the Ella Clah mysteries and their new novel, A Time of Change, which came out April 9th. As writing partners and husband and wife, the Thurlos know all about writing – and living – love!

The chat will be loosely moderated by Tor Publicist Aisha Cloud (@acloudy). We hope fans of romance novels, romantic subplots, and hell, fans of real-life romance will join us using the Twitter hashtag #TorChat!

About the Authors
DEBORAH COONTS (@DeborahCoonts) was born in Texas, according to her mother, though she’s not totally sure—her mother can’t be trusted. But she was definitely raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food, and beer. She currently resides in Las Vegas, where family and friends tell her she can’t get into too much trouble. Silly people. Coonts has built her own business, practiced law, flown airplanes, written a humor column for a national magazine, and survived a teenager. Her next novel, Lucky Bastard, will be published on May 14th.

AIMÉE and DAVID THURLO (@AimeeThurlo) have, together and separately, written more than seventy novels in a variety of genres. The Thurlos’ writing career began when Aimée was inspired to write a novel while David was teaching middle school. She sat down with legal pad and pencil, began a romantic intrigue, and soon found David looking over her shoulder whenever class was out. They quickly discovered that they could write with one voice, and their combined efforts resulted in books characterized by the unique stamp that defined their partnership in life and work. In addition to many romantic suspense novels, the Thurlos have written three different mystery series, including their flagship series of Ella Clah police procedurals, set on the Navajo Reservation. Their latest novel, A Time of Change, published on April 9th.

March #TorChat Lineup Revealed

Queen Victoria’s Book of Spells

Image Placeholder of - 28

This month, #TorChat is exploring the nineteenth century and the world of gaslamp fantasy! Join us as editor and moderator Ellen Datlow chats with Catherynne Valente, Kaaron Warren, Leanna Renee Hieber, and Jeffrey Ford on March 20th at 4 PM Eastern.

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce the March #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter.

This month, #TorChat is looking back on the nineteenth century and the subgenre gaslamp fantasy. Gaslamp fantasy, according to the new anthology Queen Victoria’s Book of Spells, can take place any time during the 1800s, and is primarily set in England or in places where the British had a strong cultural presence. Rather than being a narrow subgenre, however, gaslamp fantasy is actually rather broad, and can include steampunk, historical fiction, detective tales, gothic fiction, and so much more.

Joining us to talk about this emerging genre are four authors who contributed to Queen Victoria’s Book of Spells. Catherynne M. Valente is the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen works of fiction and poetry, including the crowdfunded phenomenon The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship Of Her Own Making and the gaslamp fantasy short story “We Without Us Were Shadows;” Kaaron Warren, the award-winning author of Slights and the short story “The Unwanted Women of Surrey;” Leanna Renee Hieber, an actress, playwright, and the author of “Charged,” as well as the novel The Strangely Beautiful Tales of Miss Percy Parker; and Jeffrey Ford, the multiple award-winning author of The Shadow War and the story “The Fairy Enterprise.” Together, they’ll discuss what, exactly, gaslamp fantasy is, and why the subgenre is here to stay.

The chat will be loosely moderated by Ellen Datlow, who has been editing science fiction, fantasy, and horror short fiction for over thirty years. We hope fans of gaslamp fantasy, as well as those interested in learning more about it, will follow the chat and join in using the Twitter hashtag #TorChat!

Tor Books (@torbooks) is thrilled to announce the December #TorChat, part of a monthly series of genre-themed, hour-long chats created by Tor Books and hosted on Twitter.

Tor Books is home to an internationally-renowned, multiple award-winning science fiction, fantasy, and horror publishing program. Working hard behind the scenes to edit, produce, publicize, and publish these books is an unlikely team of misfits who’ve been working like crazy all year. All of our vacation days have piled up, but before we take them, we thought, hey, let’s take a look back at the year we’ve had. After all, it might end in a little over a week.

So, that’s exactly what we’re doing. The staff of Tor Books and Tor.com are going to be tweeting their favorite moments of the year, whether it’s their favorite book, movie, convention moment, TV show, or other pop culture phenom. It’s sure to be a geeky fun discussion, full of last minute holiday gift ideas.

The chat will be loosely moderated by Tor Associate Publicist Leah Withers (@PhaeTo). We hope that sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and genre fiction fans in general will follow the chat and join in using the Twitter hashtag #TorChat!

About the participants
Beyond the dragons, starships and books, Tor is made up of a grab bag of people who are either dyed in the wool genre fans or have been baptized by fire into being such. For many of the employees taking up desk space on the 13th, 14th and 21st floors of the Flatiron building, getting a job at Tor was like being allowed on the mothership. Anyone else is publicly shamed until the Stockholm Syndrome takes effect. We are a fun group of well read ‘nerds’ to whom not self-defining as a geek is a deal-breaker.
