George R. R. Martin and Melinda Snodgrass talk Jokers and Wild Cards

Low Chicago is out in paperback (and soon to be a Hulu show)! Learn more about the Wild Cards world with this interview with editors George R. R. Martin and Melinda Snodgrass, and Wild Cards authors Caroline Spector, John Jos. Miller, and Walter Jon Williams.

In the opens in a new windowWild Cards world, you can’t understate the importance of Jokers, the supers who got the short end of the stick. In a world filled with aces and jokers, these authors ask, what does it truly mean to be human?

In Low Chicago, a gang of criminals scattered throughout the past threaten the stability of the world in George R. R. Martin’s latest Wild Cards adventure.

The stakes were already high enough at Giovanni Galante’s poker table that night in Chicago. Poker. Dealer’s choice. Seven players. A million-dollar cash buy-in.

But after a superpowered mishap, the most high-profile criminals in the city are scattered throughout the past and their schemes across time threaten the stability of the world.

Perfect for current fans and new readers alike, Low Chicago is an all-new time travel adventure that highlights the criminal underworld of 1920s Chicago, featuring a fresh cast of characters from the Wild Cards universe.

Co-edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin and Melinda M. Snodgrass (screenwriter, Star Trek), Low Chicago features the writing talents of Saladin Ahmed (author of the bestselling comic Black Bolt), Paul Cornell (screenwriter, Doctor Who), Marko Kloos (author of the bestselling Frontlines series), John Jos. Miller, Mary Anne Mohanraj (Bodies in Motion, The Stars Change), Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy and Theodore Sturgeon Award finalist Christopher Rowe, Kevin Andrew Murphy, and Melinda M. Snodgrass.

“Martin has assembled an impressive array of writers. . . . Progressing through the decades, Wild Cards keeps its momentum.”—Locus

Now in development for TV: Rights to develop Wild Cards for TV have been acquired by Universal Cable Productions, the team that brought you The Magicians and Mr. Robot, with the co-editor of Wild Cards, Melinda Snodgrass as executive producer.

Wild Cards Discussion with Saladin Ahmed, Paul Cornell, and Melinda Snodgrass

Image Placeholder of - 25 Listen to the authors of George R. R. Martin’s latest Wild Cards novel discuss Low Chicago!

George R. R. Martin’s famous other series is a great sandbox that has hosted some of the best writers in science fiction, fantasy, and graphic novels. The Wild Cards universe is a place where superheroes and villains fight, love, and just try to survive. The plague that led to the emergence of superhero “Aces” and mutant “Jokers” resonates with anyone who’s ever felt a bit… different from normal people.

Hugo and Eisner Award-nominated author Saladin Ahmed (The Crescent Throne, Marvel’s Black Bolt,) Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Chalk) and Melinda Snodgrass, who is a long-time Wild Cards author and editor, a screenwriter, and the current executive producer on the forthcoming Wild Cards TV show, all have a lot to say both about working with superheroes and working with George.

About Wild Cards IV: Aces Abroad: The action-packed alternate fantasy returns for a new generation, featuring fiction from #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin, Michael Cassutt, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Lewis Shiner, and more—plus two completely new stories from Kevin Andrew Murphy and bestselling author Carrie Vaughn.

Forty years after the Wild Card Virus’s release, the World Health Organization decides it’s time to take a delegation of Aces, Jokers, politicians, and journalists on a fact-finding mission to learn how other countries are dealing with the virus that reshaped humanity. Leading the team is Gregg Hartmann, a senator with presidential aspirations and a dangerous ace up his sleeve. Joining him is a menagerie of some of the series’ best and most popular Wild Cards, including Dr. Tachyon, aces Peregrine and Golden Boy, and jokers Chrysalis, Troll, and Father Squid.

From the jungles of Haiti and Peru to the tumultuous political climate of Egypt, from a monastery in Japan to the streets of the most glamorous cities of Europe, the Wild Cards are in for an eye-opening trip. While some are worshiped as actual gods, those possessing the most extreme mutations are treated with a contempt that’s all too familiar to the delegates from Jokertown. New alliances will be formed, new enemies will be made, and some actions will fulfill centuries-old prophecies that make ripples throughout the future of the Wild Cards universe.

opens in a new windowThe Empty Ones by Robert BrockwayFollowing on the heels of Robert Brockway’s comedic horror novel The Unnoticeables, The Empty Ones reveals the next chapter in the lives of a few misfits attempting to fight back against the mysterious Unnoticeables. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn, who was very nearly beat when last we saw her, continues her fight into the desert of Mexico and the Southwest US, seeking the mysterious gear cult. Once there, she discovers what the gear cult is really up to: trying to ‘pin’ the angels to Earth, focus their attention here, and get as much of humanity as possible “solved”–which, in their minds, is akin to being saved–and in the process discovers something incredible about herself.

Sneak Peek: The Edge of Dawn by Melinda Snodgrass

opens in a new windowThe Edge of Dawn by Melinda SnodgrassWhat do you do when the Earth is under assault from monstrous creatures by alternate dimensions and you’re the only person who can wield the weapon that can destroy them?

From the American southwest to a secret society in Turkey, the paladin Richard Oort and his ward Mosi try to stay in front of their enemies, but the world is at stake—and time is running short. We hope you enjoy this excerpt from opens in a new windowThe Edge of Dawn by Melinda Snodgrass.

Chapter One

Mosi Tsosie was scared.

The family had moved their flock of sheep to BIA land near the edge of Chaco Canyon and built a hogan. Grandfather was very traditional and refused to let them use a prefab building. They did carry the logs in the bed of the pickup because trees were scarce to nonexistent out by the canyon, but the sod was cut from the earth, and the logs were chinked with that same soil, and it had five sides and a door facing east as was proper.
